STATE REP CANDIDATE REMINDS DRIVERS TO BE CAREFUL SINCE SCHOOL IS NOW BACK IN SESSION
SCARBOROUGH, MAINE – Sean Flaherty, a candidate for the Maine House of Representatives in Scarborough, says he is now seeing kids at bus stops in the morning and being dropped off in neighborhoods at different times around 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm after school. He says each year there are “close calls” with motorists and kids in or near the road.
“We are all in a hurry – and sometimes not completely focused on the road – driving to work in the morning, or doing errands in the afternoon,” he says. “The need to be careful while driving is always there, but especially perhaps now with kids back in school and near the road quite a bit each day.”
Flaherty says avoiding traffic accidents, and saving lives, is an important concern he has while campaigning door to door for the House of Representatives seat. He also says that drivers should be careful about not passing a stopped school bus.
“My bus stop growing up was right on Black Point Road,” Flaherty said, “I remembered too many cars that would fly by while I jumped off those bus steps.”
“When the bus is coming toward you and those flashing lights come on, we all just have to stop. Keep the safety of our kids in mind. A police officer told me a good rule is – if you are within a football field of an oncoming bus, and see the lights go on, stop!”
Flaherty says police will tell you failing to do so could not only endanger the lives of kids, but could also result in stiff fines and demerit points on your driver license.
Sean Flaherty, a Scarborough native, is running against Rep. John McDonough to represent Maine House District 127, which encompasses part of Scarborough.
