July 14th, 2008 by admin

SCARBOROUGH, ME – July 13, 2008 – On Sunday morning, July 13, three hundred athletes competed in the first-ever Scarborough Triathlon in Scarborough Maine. The race began with a challenging swim through 4-foot swells, but finished successfully to good weather and Scarborough’s 350th Anniversary Celebration.

Mike Caiazzo, a professional triathlete from hometown Scarborough, took top honors in the men’s field, finishing in 59:48:35. Angela Bancroft placed first among women with a time of 1:10:30. Bancroft, from Paris, Maine, was also recently named “Gatorade Athlete of the Month” in the July issue of Triathlete magazine.

The Scarborough community played a huge role in success of the event. Large numbers of town residents lined streets and gathered at the finish to cheer athletes on. Sean Flaherty and the Scarborough 350th Celebration committee brought an exceptional group of volunteers together to support with race logistics, and under the leadership of Dave Currier, the Scarborough Beach State Park lifeguards ensured athletes were safe in the rough water conditions.

Race Director Will Thomas was excited about the positive outcome of the inaugural event, and the success of the epic swim: “It was a beautiful day and a beautiful course, and the swim was an incredibly memorable one. It was an impressive testament to triathletes and how adventurous and tenacious they are.”
