SCARBOROUGH, MAINE – State Legislative candidate Sean Flaherty says it might be time to take an opinion poll in Scarborough on the mascot name for Scarborough athletic teams. Flaherty was following up on a story in the press recently that quoted some long time residents as saying they would like to go back to the Redskins nickname.

Flaherty, a 2003 Scarborough High School graduate, noted he was a student at Scarborough High at the time the nickname was changed from to Red Storm.

“Personally, I thought it was time to change,” he said. “We wanted a name we could take into the 21st century, one that reflected a fighting spirit of our teams. Storm was good for Scarborough. Red Storm doesn’t seem as popular. Why not get some public feedback now and see where to go with it?”

Flaherty, who led a number of highly successful Scarborough Swim teams growing up in town, urged citizens to e-mail him their thoughts on whether a new nickname should be found. People in town can go to www.SeanFlaherty.org to send Sean an e-mail.

“The nickname is secondary to me,” he said. “The big letter ‘S’ representing Scarborough was most important when I competed for our town. I was trying to win meets for my teammates and the people of this town. I didn’t give much thought to what the mascot name was.”

Sean Flaherty, a Scarborough native, is running against Rep. John McDonough to represent Maine House District 127, which encompasses part of Scarborough.
