Cape Elizabeth, ME – The Scarborough Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving teams got off to fast start last weekend with meets against Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, and McAuley.

The Boys’ were up first on Friday night to open the season with a Tri-Meet against Cape Elizabeth and South Portland.  “What a way to start the season,” Head Coach Sean Flaherty commented, “Cape has one of the most talented teams in the State; we knew what we were up against.”

In the first two events, the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle, Scarborough started off by not only winning both events, but by also taking 2nd place in each as well. “It’s not too often you can go one-two on a team like Cape,” Flaherty said, “but to do it twice, and in your first two races of the season, that’s a whole different story!”

After Scarborough took the early lead, they never surrendered it.  With double wins from first year Scarborough swimmer Kip Gravel, and strong performances out of Jack Clark, Mark Endrizzi, Jerry Gravel, and Adam Saltz, the Red Storm out lasted Cape and South Portland to start the season with a big win 136-124-66

Saturday, the Scarborough Girls had their turn.  In their first meet of the season, the Red Storm hosted the Lions of McAuley.  “McAuley is a perennial contender in both Class B and in our Conference.” Flaherty noted, “We wanted our girls to set the tone for the rest of the season that Scarborough will be a force to be reckoned with at each and every meet.”

“Everyone knows the boys’ squad is going to be one of the best in the State,” added Flaherty, “But our girls team is equally as talented and has similar depth.  They are going to surprise a lot of people – but not me – I’m expecting big things out of both these teams.”

The Red Storm got wins from Sam Couillard, Dayna Ankermann, Maya Glab, Hannah Yerxa, and all three relay events, as they went on to easily defeat McAuley 111 to 69.

Friday the Scarborough Swimming and Diving teams will head to South Portland to face the Red Riots in a duel meet.
